Harehope Quarry’s eco classroom – outside

Our eco classroom provides Harehope Quarry with a unique base and enables us to offer a wide range of experiences. The classroom was built entirely by volunteers. The building is entirely off-grid and our visitors enjoy the experience of spending time in an environmentally-friendly and sustainable building.

Features of the eco classroom

  • a timber-framed post and beam structure designed by architect, Duncan Roberts
  • energy provided by solar, wind and hydro power
  • heating by a wood-burning, ceramic stove
  • a water supply from a borehole and rainwater harvesting
  • water heating by solar panels
  • composting toilets
  • grey water treated by a constructed reed bed
  • a living roof of stonecrop
  • recycled newspaper insulation
