The bee orchids usually start to appear about now, both in the quarry and at the Tip End but this year there is no sign of them. We assume that conditions in May were too dry for them. The photo below is one of last year’s orchids. We will keep monitoring the areas where they come up and hope they they will be late arrivals. On a more positive note a pair of oystercatcher have nested on the ‘beach’ next to the quarry pond and have now hatched. The parents are very protective and make quite a commotion when anyone uses the path along the pond!
