Last year was a bumper year for fruit production – plums, apples, black currants, red currants, cherry plum and rhubarb were all very successful from our orchard and forest garden. We are just starting to prepare for next season and to get us into the swing we set off to hunt for an apple tree high up on the fell boundary above Stanhope. This apple tree at over 800 feet (250m) above sea level and when we arrived it still had apples on it. We have taken cuttings to graft so we can grow more of these trees, in the hope that even in less productive summers we will still have apples! We’ll let you know if we are successful.
